Should you pay for G2 Starter to improve AI visibility?
By Arnav Mukherjee, founder of TofuBofu · July 20, 2026
I logged into G2 this week and got a modal I had not seen before. "Unlock visibility with G2 Starter," it said, and then, in a nicely designed panel: "Leverage G2 for LLM visibility." Add downloadable content, collect more reviews, view insights on traffic and competitor performance. Under it, in bold: G2 is the most cited source for B2B software in AI searches, with twice the citations of Reddit, Wikipedia, YouTube and Gartner.
I build a tool in exactly this space, so my first reaction was professional interest, not alarm. G2 selling AI visibility is not a threat to anyone doing this seriously. It is a signal that the category has gone mainstream. But it does raise a fair question for any founder who sees that modal: should you actually pay for it? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on what you think you are buying.
What G2 Starter genuinely does
Start with the part that is real, because it is real. For a software company, G2 is a legitimately strong source in AI answers. Kevin Indig's analysis put G2's share of voice for software at around 22.4%, and found that roughly 10% more reviews correlated with about 2% more AI citations. That is not nothing. If you sell software and buyers vet you on review sites, a rich, well-reviewed G2 profile is a signal worth having.
What Starter does is help you optimize that one profile: more review collection, richer downloadable content, a cleaner listing, and G2's own analytics on your profile traffic and category. If your goal is to make your G2 presence as strong as it can be, the tier does that job. Taken on its own terms, it is a reasonable product.
The word doing the heavy lifting is "one"
Here is the limit, and it is structural, not a knock on G2's execution. G2 can optimize G2. It can measure G2. It cannot see, or change, anything else. When a buyer asks ChatGPT for the best tool for their situation, the model assembles that answer from many places: your own site, Reddit threads, comparison pages, other directories, and yes, G2. G2 Starter improves your standing in exactly one of those inputs and reports on that one input. It has no idea whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews actually named you this morning, because it never looks at them.
There is also an incentive worth naming plainly. G2's insights are designed to keep you optimizing G2. A tool whose business is your listing will never tell you that your money would be better spent on your own content or on Reddit this quarter, even when that is true. That is not cynicism, it is just what a single-source tool is built to do. You need at least one view that is not selling you a specific source.
G2 optimizes one input. The answer is assembled from all of them.
The number that should guide the decision
Ignore the modal's headline comparison for a second. G2 marketing that it has twice the citations of Reddit or Gartner is G2's own claim about G2, and you should read it as marketing, not as a settled fact. The number I would actually plan around comes from Profound's research: brands present across four or more platforms are about 2.8 times more likely to be cited than those concentrated in one or two. That is the real lesson of how these engines work. They gain confidence to name you when they see you corroborated in several independent places.
Which flips the G2 question on its head. A strong G2 profile is a good brick. It is a bad house. If you pour budget into perfecting one source while ChatGPT is quietly building its answer from five others you have ignored, you are optimizing the input you can already see and neglecting the ones deciding the outcome. Profound's same work shows Reddit at roughly 12% of ChatGPT citations and platforms like Clutch contributing too. The winning move is breadth, not a perfect profile in a single garden.
And if you are not a software company
Then most of this is moot. G2 is a software review platform, and its citation weight lives in software categories. If you run an MSP, a cybersecurity firm, a consulting or accounting practice, or an agency, G2 is usually thin or absent for you, and the sources that move your AI answers are different: your own content answering the specific questions your buyers ask, Clutch and industry directories, local and third-party corroboration. Paying to optimize a G2 profile in a category that barely applies to you is close to lighting money on fire. Spend it where your buyers' answers are actually assembled.

If you sell software, buyers already vet you on G2, and you want to make that one profile as strong as it can be, Starter is a fair purchase for that job. Just buy it knowing what it is: an upgrade to one input, measured on its own terms. It is not a read on your AI visibility, and it is not a strategy.
The thing G2's modal cannot sell you, by design, is the view across everything: whether the engines name you, which sources are carrying you, and where the next hour of work should go. That is a different tool doing a different job. G2 optimizes your G2 profile. Something has to measure and fix you across all six engines and every source AI reads. Keep the two straight, and the paywall stops looking like a decision and starts looking like one line item among several.
Frequently asked questions
Is G2 Starter worth it for AI visibility?
If you are a software company, a strong G2 profile is worth having, because G2 is one of the most cited sources for B2B software in AI answers. Whether the paid Starter tier is worth it depends on what you expect from it. It optimizes and measures your presence on G2 itself: more reviews, richer profile content, and G2's own traffic and category insights. It does not tell you whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google AI Overviews name you, and it cannot change anything outside G2. Buy it to strengthen one important source, not as your AI visibility strategy.
Does G2 actually get cited by AI engines?
Yes, for software specifically. Analysis by Kevin Indig found G2 holds roughly 22.4% share of voice for software in AI answers, and adding about 10% more reviews correlates with roughly 2% more citations. So a good G2 presence is a real signal for a SaaS company. The caveat is that this is one source among many, and the same research shows review platforms, Reddit, and your own content all contribute. G2 being cited does not mean G2 is the whole picture.
Can G2 tell me if ChatGPT or Perplexity names my company?
No. G2's insights are scoped to G2: your profile traffic, your category performance, and how you compare to competitors on G2. It has no view into whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews or Bing Copilot actually name you when a buyer asks for a recommendation. Answering that requires querying those engines directly and reading the real answers, which is a different job from optimizing a review profile.
Is G2 the most cited source for B2B software in AI search?
G2 markets itself as the most cited source for B2B software in AI search, and independent analysis does put its share of voice high for software, around 22.4%. Treat the stronger promotional framing as G2's own marketing claim rather than a settled fact. What is well supported is that G2 is a major source for software and that no single source is the whole answer. Profound's research found that brands present across four or more platforms are about 2.8 times more likely to be cited, which is the more useful number for deciding where to invest.
What is the alternative to paying for G2 Starter?
It is not really an alternative, it is a wider frame. Keep a healthy G2 profile if you are software, and also build the other sources AI reads: your own site with clear, structured, answerable content, third-party corroboration like Reddit and comparison pages, and directories relevant to your category. Then measure across the actual engines, not just one profile. Diversification is what compounds, because being present in many places is what makes an engine confident enough to name you.
Does G2 help if I am not a software company?
Much less. G2 is a software review platform, so its citation weight is concentrated in software categories. If you are an MSP, a cybersecurity firm, a consulting or accounting practice, or an agency, G2 is often thin or irrelevant, and the sources that move AI answers for you are different: your own content, Clutch or industry directories, local and third-party corroboration, and the specific questions your buyers ask. Paying G2 to optimize a profile in a category that barely applies to you is not where your money should go.
Should I collect more G2 reviews for AI visibility?
If you are software, yes, within reason. The Kevin Indig analysis suggests roughly 10% more reviews correlates with roughly 2% more AI citations, so real reviews from real customers help. What does not help is anything fake: fabricated reviews violate G2's terms, are illegal under FTC rules, and get removed, which can cost you more than they ever gained. Collect genuine reviews as one signal among several, not as a shortcut to AI visibility.
