We asked 4 AI engines who the best managed IT service provider in Ohio, USA is, then checked their answers against Clutch's real directory. See which firms every engine agrees on, and which real, reviewed companies got zero AI mentions at all.
Methodology
We asked ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini the same open question, "what are the best managed IT service providers (MSPs) in Ohio, USA?", extracted every company name each one volunteered, then checked those names against Clutch.co's live Ohio, USA directory and a Google search. Two more engines, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot, are wired into this pipeline but returned nothing this round: our SerpApi credits ran out mid-research. We're showing that as blocked, not as a zero, an honest gap is more useful than a fake number.
How grounded is each engine?
Of the companies each engine named, what share are independently verifiable, either on Clutch or in Google search results? This is the clearest structural finding in the data.
Verified = the company also appears on Clutch's real directory or in Google search results. The most retrieval-grounded engine in this sample is consistently more accurate than the training-data-only engines.
Where the sources overlap
Three sources, AI engines (combined), Clutch's real directory, and Google search, named 61 distinct companies between them.
Each number is a company count. 2 companies appear in all three sources, the closest thing to a "verified consensus pick" this pilot found. 40 companies were named by an AI engine and confirmed nowhere else.

What's blocked, not measured as zero
Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot are wired into this pipeline the same way as the other four engines, they returned nothing this round because our SerpApi credits ran out mid-research, not because those engines have no answer. Google Maps / local pack results are not attempted at all yet, no API is connected for it. Re-running this pipeline once that's resolved will fill in the real picture with no code changes.
