AthenaHQ alternatives: what $295 a month in credits actually buys
By Arnav Mukherjee, founder of TofuBofu · August 10, 2026
AthenaHQ's Starter plan is $295 a month and includes $300 a month in credits. That is a slightly unusual sentence, and it is the most important thing on the pricing page.
Almost every other tool in this category sells you a fixed number of prompts. Athena sells you a balance. Whether that is generous or tight depends entirely on a consumption rate that is not on the page, and it is the first thing I would ask on a call.
What it does well, which is a lot
Athena calls itself the command center for AEO and GEO, and the feature list backs the ambition. It covers 8 or more engines, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok, so Claude is in, which much of the category cannot say.
The integration list is the strongest we have seen in this category: GA4, Google Search Console, Shopify, Tableau, Power BI and Looker. That is not a checkbox. Pulling Search Console alongside AI visibility data is the only practical route to connecting a mention to anything downstream, and the BI connectors matter to any team that has to report into a wider stack rather than screenshot a dashboard.
It also ships Ask Athena, an AI copilot over your own data. Copilots are becoming standard here, so the question is no longer whether a tool has one but whether it is grounded. There is a quick test for that below, and it is worth running before you pay for any of them.
The credit model, and the three questions to ask about it
Credit pricing is not a trick. It is honest about a real cost structure, since every question put to every engine costs the vendor money. But it moves a decision from purchase time to usage time, and it interacts badly with the one practice that most improves measurement quality.
AI answers are non-deterministic, so sampling a question several times is how you avoid reporting a coin flip as a percentage. Under a credit model, sampling three times costs three times as much, and adding engines multiplies again. The structure quietly prices the correct behaviour as the expensive one.
Where the money goes in this category
Where it stops
Athena identifies content gaps and recommends optimizations. It does not write the comparison page in your voice and publish it to WordPress, Webflow or HubSpot. That gap is the whole category's gap and it is why we keep making the same argument: measurement has commoditised and execution has not. Tracking now starts around fifty dollars a month, several vendors give away a free checker, and G2 created a dedicated AI search visibility category in March 2026. A category page and a free tier in the same year is what commoditisation looks like.
Athena's published case-study figures, a six-times share-of-voice lift in 60 days and a 38 percent month-on-month increase in leads from AI search, are the kind of numbers worth treating carefully. They are vendor-reported without a stated methodology, which is not unique to Athena and is close to universal here. Ask what was measured, over what period, against what baseline.
Get a baseline that costs nothing
A free scan runs your buying questions across all six engines, Claude included, and shows every verbatim answer. No credits, no card.
Get your free auditWhat "does the fix" means, in nouns
Every tool in this category says it helps you improve. Here is ours stated as things that exist rather than as a promise, because the difference is checkable.
And the Analyst, which is where most tools now have something and almost none of them have this: ask ours a question your data cannot answer and it refuses and names what would answer it. It runs on a deterministic pack built from your own stored scans and is instructed never to state a number, a query or a trend that is not in that pack. It also treats every AI answer it reads as untrusted quoted text, so a competitor's answer cannot smuggle an instruction into your analysis. A copilot that improvises about your visibility is the exact failure this product exists to catch, so ours is built to shut up instead.
All six engines, Claude included, are on the free plan. Measurement is the part of this category that has commoditised. The three rows above are the part that has not.
The alternatives, by what you need
One test worth running on any copilot, Ask Athena and our Analyst included: ask it something your data cannot answer. A grounded assistant says it does not know and points at what is missing. An ungrounded one produces fluent, confident, plausible advice with nothing behind it. Ours is built to refuse, which is a deliberate constraint and the reason we published eleven checks for holding any vendor to the same standard.
Frequently asked questions
What is AthenaHQ?
AthenaHQ describes itself as the command center for AEO and GEO. It tracks brand visibility across 8 or more large language models including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok, and adds competitive intelligence, share of voice, content gap analysis, citation source tracking and real-time mention alerts. It also ships Ask Athena, an AI copilot that answers questions about your own data, and integrates with GA4, Google Search Console, Shopify, Tableau, Power BI and Looker.
How much does AthenaHQ cost?
Read at their pricing page in August 2026: Essential is free with $25 of credit, Starter is $295 a month which includes $300 a month in credits, and Enterprise is custom. The important structural detail is that this is credit-based rather than a flat allowance, so what you can actually track depends on how credits are consumed per scan, per engine and per prompt rather than on a stated number of questions. Ask for the consumption rate before signing, because two tools at the same headline price can differ several-fold in what they let you measure.
Is AthenaHQ good?
It is one of the more complete measurement products in the category and its integration list is the strongest we have seen. Pulling GA4 and Search Console alongside AI visibility data is genuinely useful, because it is the only practical way to connect a mention to anything downstream, and Tableau, Power BI and Looker connectors matter to teams that report into a wider stack. Where it stops is execution: it identifies content gaps and recommends, but it does not write the asset in your voice and publish it to your CMS, so the work still lands on your team.
What are the best AthenaHQ alternatives?
By budget. Cheaper self-serve tracking: LLM Pulse from about 49 euros a month or Omnia from about 79, though Claude is a paid add-on on the first and available on request on the second. Widest engine coverage: Brand24 at nine engines, with AI Visibility as an add-on below its $1,499 Enterprise tier. Deepest sampling: Evertune, which runs each prompt 100 times per model but publishes no pricing. Measurement plus the fix drafted and published: that is us, with all six engines on the free tier.
What does credit-based pricing mean in an AI visibility tool?
It means your monthly allowance is spent rather than allocated, so the number of questions you can track is not fixed at purchase. Every scan, every engine and often every extra sample draws down the same balance. The practical consequences are worth understanding before you buy: sampling a question several times to handle answer variability costs several times as much, adding engines multiplies consumption, and a heavy month can exhaust the balance early. Ask three questions. How many credits does one question on one engine consume, how many samples does that include, and what happens when the balance runs out.
Does AthenaHQ have an AI assistant like other tools?
Yes, it ships Ask Athena, described as an AI copilot providing data-backed insights. Copilots are becoming standard in this category, so the question is not whether a tool has one but whether it is grounded: does it answer strictly from your stored scan data and admit when the answer is not there, or does it improvise plausible-sounding advice. Ask any of them something your data cannot answer and watch what happens. Ours is built to refuse, which is a deliberate constraint rather than a limitation, because an assistant that invents an answer about your visibility is the same failure the product exists to catch.
